Armed with munchies, we headed back onto the road, laughing and singing to ’70s rock tunes on a crackly radio station as barbwire fenced prairie grass zipped by the corners of the headlights. After another brief stop in Wichita Falls, we pulled into Fort Worth at sunrise.

Fingers of purple and pink clouds stretched across the sky in the pre-dawn, each etched by shards of golden rays. Ryan pointed with his ring finger lifted from the steering wheel. “Gorgeous, right? God did good this time.”

“Amen. Take Highway 30, it’s quicker.”

We dropped off the rental car and took the long-term parking shuttle to get mine. Ryan handled our luggage and once it was secured in the back of my hatchback, I gave him a brief lesson on where all my car’s controls were.

He poked at the knobs. “I think I’ve got it. Everything seems easy enough. Now if you would be so kind as to direct me out of this concrete maze.”

I laughed. “DFW Airport does take some getting used to.” After we were back on the highway headed to Fort Worth, I broached the next topic. “Which do you want first? Breakfast or freshen up at my apartment?”

He took his gaze from the road. “You are inviting me to your place?”

“Well, you need to drop me off and we have over two hours…” My tongue halted my words. I hoped he didn’t misinterpret my offer.

His voice became stern. “Emma, you don’t know me.”

“I know you enough to trust you, Ryan. I have an ironing board, washer, dryer, extra bathroom, all at your disposal. You could even take a cat nap on my couch while I unpack.” I squirmed, hoping he’d gotten the hint—propriety would rule. “Speaking of which…I own two cats. Or rather, they own me. Is that okay?”

“I like them. Had one as a child. Called him Rex. Best friend I ever had.”

A guy—correction, gentleman—who prays, likes Mendelssohn, and cats. And he’s a good-looking doctor to boot. Wow. Trey’s betrayal seemed less traumatic now.

Ryan set his jaw and stared at the growing traffic edging down the four-lane highway along with us. The city had begun to awaken, though the final weekday of Spring Break lessened the rush hour crawl considerably. After a few minutes, he replied. “Thank you, Em. I appreciate the offer of your hospitality…and the trust. I won’t abuse it.”

“I know, which is why I suggested it.”

His face warmed. “Let’s eat first, then freshen up. Which exit do I take again?”

We eased onto the access lane and pulled into the diner. The quiet morning vanished as soon as Ryan yanked open the double glass doors. Honky-tonk music blared from an old juke box above the din of caffeinated customers. A blackboard on an easel announced three eggs, two pork chops, and grits as the daily special. Also homemade pies for $7.99, or $2.50 a slice.

I whispered into his ear. “Welcome to Texas.”

“Thank you, ma’am.”

As we were led to our booth, his hand slipped around my waist to steady my stride.
